Bamboo Specifications

Phyllostachys aureosulcata (Yellow Groove Bamboo) - This bamboo has a green culm (cane) with an alternating yellow stripe. Occasionally, the culms will produce a slight zig zag called janiculation.  This selection will reach 32 feet tall X 2.5 inches in caliper.  The leaves are hardy to -10 degrees F.  Buds and stems are much hardier.  Good spreader

                       

Phyllostachys bissetii (Bisset’s Bamboo) - Bisset’s Bamboo will reach 23 feet in height X 2 inches in caliper.  This selection has dark green leaves and culms (canes) as well as a wide branch angle.  Once established, the foliage is full low to the ground.  Excellent for screening.  Hardy to -10 degrees F.  The buds and stems are much hardier.  Good Spreader.

 

Phyllostachys nigra (Black Bamboo) - Black culms (canes) add interest to the landscape.  New shoots are green and later turn black.  Genetically, may reach 30 feet tall X 2 inches in caliper.  Temperatures below 0 degrees F may yield some leaf damage.  Buds and stems are much hardier.  Slower grower than other selections.

 

Phyllostachys nigra ‘Bory’ (Snake Skin Bamboo) - This selection is a type of Black Bamboo.  It has dark blotches on the culms (canes).  Genetically may reach 50 feet tall X 3 inches in caliper.  The Nashville environment will produce 30 feet in height X 2 inches in caliper.  Hardy to 0 degrees F with no major damage.  Buds and stems are much hardier.   

 

Semiarundinaria fastuosa (Temple Bamboo) - Temple Bamboo has most of it’s foliage on the top half of the culm (cane).  Produces a very vertical appearance.  As the culms (canes) mature they produce a slight red coloration.  May reach 30 in height X 2 inches in caliper.
